Estimating The Density of Candida Albicans in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A Pilot Study)
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Oral Candidosis is among the find-ings of acute leukemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the intensity of C.albicans, before treatment and at the Induc-tion phase. Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) aged 2-14 years enrolled in study. Whole Saliva samples were obtained and cultured to determine the mean count of C.albicans Colony Forming Units (CFU) before induction of leukemia, and at days 35 and 64 of induction. White blood cell counts were also determined at the same time. Data were transferred to SPSS 19 and analyzed using paired and Independent t-test, Chi square, and stepwise regression. Results: The mean CFU count was significantly increased before beginning of the treatment [22.41±10.47] to days 35[28.5±9.29] (P=0.006) and 64 of induction[30.5±11.82] (P=0.009) an-dat the first day of consolidation [49.66±3.01] (P=0.032).The quantity of colonies was sparse (10-100 CFU/ml) without clinical manifestations of oral candidiasis. Main predictors of C.albicans colonization were age and white blood cell count (WBC). Children younger than age 10 yrs (OR=-19.7, 95% CL [12.37-15.82 for day 35 eval-uation] and (OR=-0.002, 95% CL[-0.004-0.00 inday 64]and those with lower WBC (OR=-13.47, 95% CL [-25.29 -1.65]) showed higher risks of colonization. Conclusion: C.albicans colonization was ob-served among the leukemia child patients at early phase of treatment without clinical mani-festations. The predictors of colonization were age and white blood cell counts.

full textFACTORS EFFECTIVE IN THE PROGNOSIS OF NEUTROPENIC FEVER IN THE CHILDREN WITH ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA
Background & Aims: Febrile Neutropenia (FN) is one of the common complications of chemotherapy in the children with malignancy. In this study, we investigated the effective factors in response to the treatment of patients with febrile neutropenia. By using these factors, it is possible to have a better analysis about the severity of infection of these patients and it will helpful in choosing th...
full textBrain MRI Findings in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Background: Patients with leukemia are facing more complications in order to achieve longer survival. We aimed to evaluate the frequency of central nervous system abnormalities (CNS) on MRI of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Methods: Sixty-six children with diagnosis of ALL aged 2-18 years were recruited. Non-contrast sequences of brain MRI in addition to diffusion weighted i...
full textEvaluation of Immunoglobulin-A Level in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of leukemia among children. Immunoglobulin A is the most numerous immunoglobulin isotype in mucosal secretion. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency can increase risk of cancer in patients. Since few studies have been done on relation between serum IgA and ALL, this study was attempted to evaluate serum IgA in ALL patients...

Introduction: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) are the most common childhood and adolescence malignancy respectively.Due to the increasing survival of these children, today late side effects of treatments are important. Therapies such as corticosteroids, cytotoxic and radiotherapy effect on bone density and put the child at risk of osteoporosis and pathologi...
full textBone Density in Pediatric Patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL): A Literature Review
Introduction: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in children and the main form of childhood leukemia (75%). ALL different treatment options have a great impact on children weight and appetite. The improving prognosis for children with cancer refocuses attention to long-term outcomes with an emphasis on quality of life. More survival rate allows researchers to eval...
